About Thursday evening
The evening in Concert Hall Aarhus will begin at 17:00 with a reception hosted by Aarhus Municipality. The reception will be followed by a public lecture by John Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) entitled “The Role of the West in the Present Global Insecurity.”

In the course of Thursday evening, professor Mearsheimer will begin by presenting his interpretation of the current security policy situation. His presentation will followed by a discussion of the security in the Arctic by some of the veterans of Scandinavian foreign and security policy: Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Holger K. Nielsen and Per Stig Møller.

This part of the evening will be concluded with a glass of wine and a special concert by Norwegian Sami singer Mari Boine.

About John Mearsheimer
John Mearsheimer is known for being a highly controversial voice within the international security policy debate. In the autumn of 2014, the journal Foreign Affairs published a sensational article in which the Chicago professor claimed that the primary responsibility for the Ukrainian crisis belongs to the US and its European allies. The most important cause of the problems we are facing today is the expansion of NATO, which was a key element of a larger strategy designed to remove Ukraine from Russian influence and integrate the country into the West. Other critical elements include the eastern expansion of EU and the West’s support for the pro-democratic movement in Ukraine since the Orange Revolution of 2004.

About Mari Boine
The Norwegian Sami singer and musician Mari Boine is known for her unique personal expression which combines elements from Sami music, rock and music from other cultures. Her music has received critical acclaim in several countries. Mari Boine has been awarded with several distinctions, for example the Saami Council’s honorary prize in 1992 and the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2003. In 2009 she was made Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.

She is without a doubt Norway’s leading representative in ‘world music.’ Her singing style is not easily defined and has undergone major developments since she began singing in the 1980s. For more information, see http://www.mariboine.no/index.html
